Very good overall, keyboard key gets stuck (ordered a replacement)

A very good machine. Very cute design, ergonomic keyboard. Slow as hell – it’s not the product’s drawback, but the platforms overall. I’m definitely going to get 2G of memory, otherwise there is disk activity all the time that slows down the machine. Haven’t been able to achieve good video performance – low fps, spotty – tried in all browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome). Installed Windows 7 64-bit on it just for fun – supposedly besides addressing 4G+ of memory (which is not applicable) it also manages the memory better. After only 3 weeks of use the Escape key gets stuck for no reason (no spill, nothing) – ordered a replacement.

Great value netbook. Asus developed the netbook . We started with their triple ‘e’ 7″ a few years ago. That served its purpose very well; a easy to use web machine to be used by my wife in the family room. Virtually no memory and the Linux operating system was a very good entre into netbooks. That little computer got a ton of use by everyone in the family. Alas, its time drew to an end as the limited memory and the inability to upgrade the operting system plus the small screen finally became too much to bear. Then along comes the Asus 1001. Addresses all the issues, and everyone is delighted. It has a nice shell. Overall fit and finish is generally good, though there are a few minor fit issues. Nothing major. It’s Windows. Enough said. Linux was a lot easier to run and maintain, but what are you going to do? For a few bucks under $300 it is a great value, and if you are looking for a light, inobtrusive, general use web machine, it really hits a home run.

Surprisingly good little netbook

My wife wanted something for surfing/email/etc, so I told her that I would find a good deal on a netbook and get here one. I was worried about how the performance would be but I was pleasantly surprised with it. For what she uses it for, it is perfect. Would definitely recommend to anybody looking for something similar.

The perfect SECONDARY computer!

I have always wanted a netbook,….after I found out they came in pink of course. When I finally decided to make this dream a reality I googled not just “netbook” but “pink netbook” until i found one that had enough technilogical integrity to justify such a frivilious purchase, and voila! the asus eee 1001p…pretty on the outside, with all the right stuff inside….because after all, i guess it is what’s in the inside that counts.

Best notebook BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. We just bought a travel trailer to start cruising the highways and byways. I wanted a small computer to take along to check emails and check out camping sites as we go and make reservations. The size is just right and I have no trouble seeing the screen (I’m 60 and use my reading glasses)and for now I am just peck typing as I am very fast on my desktop and will practice to get used to the slightly smaller keyboard. I took it to our small local town and got right on the internet in the parking lot of a cafe. I can also get internet at home as my son has a router for this laptop. I downloaded AVAST security (free) and am happy with just the Microsoft Works as I don’t expect to be doing documents. I see no reason to upgrade to more Ram or full Windows 7. I run XP on my desktop and the transition was easy. 
Be aware that the Blue netbook is NOT textured like the Black as described in most reviews. It is smooth and a lovely color. I can deal with the fingerprints. I find the mousepad a bit difficult scrolling. It is not that responsive to the two/three fingers they talk about. I just use the up and down arrows. 
My son leaves his laptop plugged in and just closes the lid to put it to sleep. I did this after my netbook was fully charged and also when I unplugged it. WRONG! 
When my techy friend came to help me set up some things the unit shut down and completely reloaded everything. It took forever and there was nothing I could do. 
He said it was because I didn’t properly SHUT DOWN each time. He has since put a shut down widget, clock and calandar on my desktop. When my desktop slugs out (times when it is SO slow) I now go to the netbook and find it is faster loading and on the internet. I find no need for “n” network. For under $300 it is the PERFECT netbook.

Great Value

Very pleased with my Eee PC. It’s fast, small, boots very quickly…..solid build, but what I have come to expect from Asus. Battery way outlasts my laptop. The 1 GB memory is ok, but I will be upgrading to 2GB after warranty is out. I r4commend a protective case, and a separate mouse…..I just don’t like scroll pads. Very viewable screen………..excellent performer, especially fo0r the $$. The N450 is much better than the older N270 or N280’s out there.

Perfect Netbook

Ordered this netbook because I was looking for an n450 powered device akin to the 1005 line. 

Well let me say that I’m glad I didn’t spend the extra 60 bucks. This computer has everything the 1005 line has minus bluetooth (honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who uses bluetooth) battery life (11 vs 14 hours, real world 8 vs 11 hours), harddrive space (160GB versus 250GB which is a negligible difference), display (matte screen vs glossy screen equal resolution), wireless (g vs n) and finish (matte vs glossy). 

Now, that seems like a lot of differences, but all of them, save battery life, are pointless bells and whistles that do nothing to affect the performance of the computer (akin to putting a moon roof and a spoiler on a car and jacking the price up). 

Battery life is the only worthwhile difference between the two models (maybe worth 60-80 bucks depending on what your plans are). It would have been nice to have wireless n, but most users probably won’t notice a difference. 

As far as the screen and finish go, I think matte is actually an advantage. A glossy screen is exhausting to read on in bright light. I’ll never understand what the recent obsession with glossy screens is; they are murderous to the eyes. As for a glossy finish, your netbook will look like a piece of well worn packing tape after 15 minutes (big greasy fingerprints everywhere!). 

I’ve heard a lot of people complain that the keyboard of this model feels spongy, but I think they must be typing with mallets, because the 1001p keyboard feels like every other laptop I’ve ever used. It does not depress in the corners or anywhere for that matter and I’m a fairly hard typist. 

The first thing I did when I got this computer was clean install windows 7 ultimate and office 2003 (office 2007 being an unholy abomination; a grievous injustice perpetrated upon all of mankind). So far the netbook has been breezing through applications on 1GB ram with nary a stutter. I would highly recommend upgrading from the absolute garbage windows 7 starter, it doesn’t even let you change the wallpaper and is solely intended to annoy you. Furthermore, you might as well get rid of all the asus software (it periodically generates pop-up ads asking if you want to pay for something) and just install the drivers for lan and wireless, you really don’t need the others. 

In conclusion (ah, high school english where would I be without you) The 1001P is a solid, surprisingly powerful little netbook with excellent design. It is more than adequate for most computing tasks short of video editing. And for 280$? Are you kidding me? How can you complain?
