Ubuntu How To: Install GNOME Extensions (Firefox and Chromium)

GNOME is one of the most commonly used desktop environments for Linux/BSD desktops and laptops, but by default it can be quite lacking in customisability and other features. Fear not! There’s an easy way to modify your GNOME install: extensions!

The easiest way to install extensions is using the GNOME Shell Extensions page (https://extensions.gnome.org/). This website can be used with both Chromium based browsers and Firefox, and allows you to install extensions with a couple of clicks.

You’ll need to first install the GNOME Host Connector tool on your computer. On Ubuntu (20.04), open up the Terminal and run the following command (it’s the same command even if you use Firefox):

sudo apt install chrome-gnome-shell

Other distros + BSD users view the correct command here: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShellIntegrationForChrome/Installation

You’ll then need to install the GNOME Shell browser extension too. To do this, simply search in your browser’s extension/add-on store for GNOME Shell or use the links below:

That’s it! Now all you need to do is find a GNOME Extension you want to install on the GNOME Extensions library, and toggle the ON/OFF switch to initiate the install, and then click Install to confirm.
